Meet Burgundie

Burgundie Miceli was born and raised by her hippie artist mother and WWII-era German grandfather and Sicilian grandmother in Columbus, Ohio. Burg, as she is known by most, has had a diverse and dynamic yoga practice for over 20 years. After working in healthcare and the corporate world for 15 years and experiencing the physical and emotional effects of intense stress, Burg chose to leave it and follow her passions of teaching, helping others, and yoga.

In 2015, Burg opened her cozy brick & mortar studio in her own neighborhood in Columbus, Ohio, and named it Yoga Happiness Studio. Following her belief that yoga is for everybody and every body, her teaching style and classes are intentionally geared toward people who may not be comfortable with large groups and who want to learn and practice in a more personalized and intimate setting.

Yoga, for Burg, began as a weird and mysterious thing in her life when her mother brought her to a Kundalini class at the age of 12. Burg experimented with chanting and meditation without realizing it was yoga. To her, it was just strange stuff her mother did!

During her high school and college years, her meditation and movement practice helped build her confidence, kept her as grounded as a young-adult could be, and was a big part in working on having a healthy body-image.

In her 30s, Burg’s yoga practice became a way to maintain physical strength and manage stress, but it turned out to be the ONLY way to eliminate her migraines that were caused by a misalignment in her neck.

Now in her 40s, Burg’s yoga practice helps support her love of trail running by keeping her legs and upper body strong. Her meditation practice has grown much deeper and is a must in her daily routine. Burg’s experience of the death of her mother due to Alzheimer’s/dementia made her yoga meditation practice that much more important and also was the inspiration for her first book, published in 2018, as well as a series of books in progress.

Burgundie has a teaching style that is truly her own. Her no nonsense, non-dogmatic approach to yoga is refreshing. She masterfully blends many different styles of yoga into her classes including hatha, ashtanga, yin, kundalini and vinyasa. Burgundie's knowledge of anatomy and proper alignment really informs the way that she teaches. She has a way of guiding you into a challenging pose with just the right amount of instruction and appropriate cueing, so that you can explore the fullest expression of the pose to your own ability and skill level.

Burgundie checks in with her students before every class and will customize the class to the needs of the students that show up. She really takes the time to get to know her students and teaches to those in the room. I appreciate knowing that she will support and challenge me based on that quick check-in. I always learn something new when I take Burgundie's class - she is passionate about learning (about all kinds of things!) and she shares that newfound knowledge with her students.

I enjoy class with Burgundie because she is straightforward, supportive and skilled at leading a safe, effective and creative yoga class. She doesn't just teach the physical practice of yoga either - she encourages her students to practice all facets of yoga even when they are "off the mat".

A few friends invited me to join them for a yoga class at Tuttle Rec Center. I'd been suffering with some intense hip and leg pain and was less than insured. I'd tried so many different avenues to mitigate the pain, and I was a little skeptical of yoga, but this class fit into my insane schedule so I decided to try. That first session was filled with strangers and everyone was cautious and quiet, but after Burgundie introduced herself the whole room immediately warmed up. Even though there was a broad range of experience in the room, Burgundie's demeanor brought everyone up to the same level. She made the movements and poses so accessible and easy to grasp.
The way yoga is presented to us in popular culture can make it kind of seem as if you'd need to be granted keys to the magical kingdom in order to understand the way to perform some expert, esoteric movements or incredibly complicated poses. Burgundie, fully respecting yogic traditions and history, presented yoga to the class as an egalitarian practice in mindfulness rather than a prescriptive exercise of perfect postures. Don't get me wrong, she was all over the class tapping someone's hip or nudging someone's foot and quietly encouraging more efficient and effective movements. Teaching. This was exactly what I wanted; to take knowledge from a teacher and make it my own. To heal myself. I practice what Burgundie has taught me, daily. Not just while actively doing yoga - sitting in my car, at my desk, standing in line, carrying groceries, playing sports, even now as I type this. I may not be able to regularly fit a whole class into my schedule, but I deeply value the confidence in my personal physiology and presence of mind I have gleaned from classes with Burgundie.
